Parachute is Possible Link to D.B. Cooper

According to KOIN News in Portland, Ore., an Amboy, Wa. man and his children discovered a buried parachute while plowing to make a road.

Authorities, including investigators for the FBI, suspect the parachute belonged to D.B. Cooper, the mysterious skyjacker that made off with a $200,000 ransom on the day before Thanksgiving way back in 1971.

So, assuming the chute is Cooper's, here's my take: A buried parachute seems to contradict the FBI's longstanding belief that Cooper didn't survive his jump. I don't think that parachute buried itself. Search crews combed Cooper's projected jump zone and surrounding areas, and it seems like they would have found a parachute had it not been hidden.

I think D.B. Cooper survived and got away with his crime.

Land Rover, Jaguar Sold

Ford sold off Land Rover and Jaguar to Tata Motors Ltd. Tata is based in India. Ford sold the brands for less than half of what it paid. Ouch.

Frankly, I was never impressed with what Ford did with these two luxury car brands, and the thought of some company from India being in charge of future designs makes me nervous. Hopefully Tata won't ruin either brand. They might. Or, they could produce brilliant results. It's hard to tell. I don't know anything about Tata Motors Ltd. Time will tell, and we'll see.

Happy Easter!

I went to Olive Garden with my family. The meal rocked, but I don't think Olive Garden has changed their menu in like five years.

How many times can you go somewhere, eat the same thing and feel refreshed?

None of the restaurants in my area change their menus much. It stinks.

Tar Heels Rout Arkansas 108-77

The Razorbacks got bounced from the NCAA Tournament after a quality win over Indiana. They weren't assertive enough, and they looked tentative and scared. Hopefully Hog coach John Pelphrey can recruit a bunch of smash mouth bruisers that can get Arkansas into the Final Four again.

No. 1 seed North Carolina simply had the better team, so they won, this time.

NCAA Tournament Under Way, Georgia Out

The Georgia Bulldogs faded in the second half against Xavier. The Bulldogs had control of the game, holding an 11-point lead with 16 minutes left. Xavier, seeded No. 3, rallied and won 73-61.

So, Georgia faded. They finally got tired. Why couldn't they fade in the SEC final and lose to Arkansas?

Terrorist Threatens Europe

Osama bin Laden threatened to "punish" Europe over cartoons he finds offensive.

I think what bin Laden means, instead of punishment, is criminal behavior. He's threatening more criminal behavior because he is a criminal. He isn't capable of being anything else.

Spring Arrives

Today marks the first day of spring! I'm so glad it's here.

Idol Loses Overmyer

Amanda Overmyer, American Idol's female hard rocker with the two-tone hair, is gone from the show.

Chikezie, Romiele Malubay, Brooke White, and Jason Castro are still alive. All of these contestants made the top 10 and will tour. Overmyer will not.

This blog's reaction: befuddlement. The vote tally is absolutely perplexing.

White is the best of the contestants mentioned above, but she isn't better than Overmyer. Some of the others should already be off. None of them performed better than Overmyer either.

As it stands now, I've been robbed of the privilege of watching Overmyer next week and for the rest of American Idol.

She had one of the best performances last night, serving up a rousing rendition of Back in the U.S.S.R. Simon Cowell's complaints to her for delivering a predictable performance didn't make sense. The Beatles' song catalog is over 30 years old. We've heard the music a trillion times already. Covers are going to be predictable. Plus, American Idol is not an unpredictability contest. It is a singing contest, a performance contest. Overmyer delivered so much more than others. Furthermore, as far as predictability goes, how can these contestants add anything new and relevant to works written and performed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney? It might be possible with Eleanor Rigby, but to expect it with every song is pretty unrealistic.

Overmyer did fine, and she should still be on the show.

Houston Win Streak Snapped

The Boston Celtics interrupted the Rockets' winning ways with a 94-74 victory. The historic win streak ends at 22.

The Rockets played like a team that had lost 22 straight. They were tired.

Anyway, the players should take solace in the fact that they lost by 20. Losing by one would haunt them.

If you're going to lose, lose by 20! Go down in a blazing inferno.

Hogs Squander SEC Tourney

The Razorbacks practically gave the final to Georgia. There's no reason why John Pelphrey's guys couldn't win that game. They were expected to, and they didn't. Too bad for Arkansans.

Perhaps Georgia's adversity helped them. The 'Dogs had to win two games in the same day just to make the final, and the team handled it nicely.

Anyway, the Hogs looked tired and flat in a game where, normally, adrenaline and emotion should play a factor in performance. The Hogs showed no adrenaline, and they didn't seem to play with the high level of passion needed to win a game like that. I don't get it.

This loss was such a downer that I skipped the selection show afterward.

Hopefully, the Hogs will live up to potential and get past Indiana in the first round. Hog fans should hope that will, steely determination and tenacious persistence aren't needed against the Hoosiers because this Razorback team doesn't have it every game. It's disappointing really.

Houston Rockets Reach Win No. 22

Way to go! The Rockets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 104-92 for their 22nd straight win. What a win streak!

Sonics Forget Defense, Lose to Nuggets 168-116

Like, shut up. 168 points? That's the fourth most ever in NBA regulation. As Amy Poehler and Seth Myers would say, really Seattle? You couldn't D 'em up a little tighter than that? Just a tad tighter? Really?

When I saw this score I assumed Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson both went for 40-plus. Nope. Anthony had 26. Iverson had 24. The kicker goes like this: Kenyon Martin scored 23 points. Marcus Camby had a triple-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Camby's assist mark is a career-high.

Seattle gave up a triple-double to the Camby Man. As they say, the Camby Man can!

Houston Streak Reaches 21

The Houston Rockets' historic run gets longer and longer. The Rockets won their 21st straight game with an 89-80 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Way to go, Houston!

This team is red hot.

SEC Tourney Moves to Georgia Tech

The Georgia Dome is out of the equation for now. The SEC Tournament will resume on the Georgia Tech campus at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, ESPN.com reports.

Perhaps there is no inanity after all. Still, I think the SEC could have held the Kentucky-Georgia game last night instead of today. The winner of that game will face a disadvantage that could have been avoided.

Storm Attacks Georgia Dome, Skewing SEC Games

Sounding very much like a freight train, an apparent funnel cloud blew through downtown Atlanta, leaving the Georgia Dome visibly damaged. The storm lifted buses and forced fire doors to open at the 16-year-old building. Debris littered the floors.

Mississippi State and Alabama were playing overtime in the SEC Tournament when the storm hit. After a lengthy delay in action, Mississippi State prevailed 69-67. The Kentucky-Georgia match-up was postponed and rescheduled for noon EST today, forcing the winner to play twice in one day to make the SEC Tournament final. The winner plays at approximately 8:30 p.m. when the Arkansas-Tennessee game concludes.

This arrangement isn't fair to Kentucky or Georgia. SEC officials should have played the game as soon as possible last night. The Georgia Dome was deemed structurally sound soon after the storm ripped a hole in the roof. Personally, I don't see how such a proclamation can sound accurate in such a short span of time. There was not enough time to conduct a proper inspection of the place. But, officials decided to lock things down to keep people from leaving.

In all likelihood, the Georgia Dome was structurally sound in spite of the damage and the unfounded proclamation of said structural soundness. The Kentucky-Georgia game should have commenced. Instead, officials wasted the rest of the night for nothing.

What were they expecting? Did they think the storm was coming back for another pass? What storm does that? I mean, really. And they decided to finish the overtime with Alabama and Mississippi State. They absolutely couldn't play the next game and keep the tournament on schedule? I don't get that. They wouldn't allow people to leave the building, yet they didn't think it wise to use the building to play the second game. Then they return to the building today to hold more games. What is the rationalization for that? They couldn't go ahead with Kentucky-Georgia.

Sometimes inanity is an amazing thing to behold. On the other hand, maybe it's not so amazing. It's certainly something though.

The Nike Air Force

I've never been a big Air Force guy. I used to have a pair with a black and grey suede upper. They were nice, but I hardly ever wore them, so I took them to Goodwill.

Kinda wish I had those back now, especially since suede Air Forces are out of production. I wish Nike would let us iD them with suede! That would be so cool! I am a fan of suede. Suede needs to made a comeback next fall!

Anyway, not a big Air Force wearer. When I was younger it was all about Air Jordans. When I was less younger it was all about Dunks. I've owned and worn a few Dunks in my life, Jordans too. In recent years, I've substituted Jordans with Air Maxes. Air Maxes rock. I run and lift in a pair of AM 360s, and they still haven't worn out.

Been doing them since November 2006!

2006!

There's like no foam in the midsole! You can't pack 'em down!

Always Know Your Limit.

I mean, you can't have a Coke, three glasses of iced tea and a caramel macchiato and expect a full night's rest.

More Thoughts on Daylight Savings Time

It should be called Daylight Wasting Time because that's what we do in the winter. We save an hour for what? Nothing. It totally gets wasted, and everyone that gets off of work at 5 p.m. gets to spend their free time in the dark. Nice.

At least that's how things work in the Central Time Zone.

Society should abolish this odd practice of falling back. Falling back is like network television stations playing the National Anthem at midnight and going off the air. Remember when they used to do that? They wasted so many opportunities for advertising dollars. Oh, the good ol' days.

Yeah, those good ol' days don't sound so hot when I blog about 'em!

Daylight Savings Time

Spring forward folks!

And don't think of it as losing an hour. When you have an extra hour before sunset, that's not losing an hour.

The NCAA Investigates Harvard

The Crimson's basketball program is under investigation for recruiting violations. Officials suspect that a Harvard assistant coach contacted recruits when contact was not allowed.

If this is true, I hope Harvard gets nailed because, you know, it puts schools like Duke and North Carolina at such a disadvantage. I mean, how could they possibly compete against such horrendous atrocities?

Favre Retires

Farewell to Brett Favre. He retired from the NFL yesterday. He is among the greatest to play quarterback.

Dems Still battling, Huckabee Bows Out

Yes, I predicted on this blog that Mike Huckabee would win the Republican nomination for president. I made that prediction well before Huckabee went on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and said he wanted God in the Constitution. His chances never recovered after that. John McCain got the Republican delegates he needed for an automatic nomination. Now McCain can focus on the general election.

A lot of people like their Constitution secular, regardless of their religious beliefs. Huckabee needs to understand this, accept it and play the game accordingly if he ever wants to be president. You can't quote he Bible repeatedly either. You have to tone it down some. A lot of voters don't like it. Still, he ran a great race. He could have won the nomination had he kept his religious views in his pocket as opposed to wearing them on his sleeve. I expected a smarter campaign from him.

Hillary Clinton needed primary wins in Ohio and Texas to stay alive in her bracket. Clinton delivered. I remember a statement by a pundit on television regarding the tenacity of her and her husband, Bill Clinton. With regards to winning, the pundit said Barrack Obama can't underestimate just how hard Bill and Hillary Clinton will fight.

That has proven true with clutch victories in Texas and Ohio, must wins to keep Clinton viable heading into Wyoming, Mississippi and all-important Pennsylvania. Now Obama needs to worry about a possible shift in momentum favoring Clinton. A CNN exit poll said she won over Ohio voters deciding late, like within the last 72 hours before going to the polls. If we indeed have a momentum shift, how long will it last?
